Play Therapy
Why play is used?
Play therapy is a developmentally appropriate form of psychotherapy in which a trained therapist uses play—such as toys, art, stories, pretend play, sand, or games—to help a child communicate feelings, process experiences, and build coping and relationship skills. It is more purposeful than ordinary playtime: the therapist creates a safe therapeutic relationship, observes themes in the child’s play, and responds in ways that support emotional growth.
Children often communicate difficult experiences more naturally through actions, imagination, and symbolic play than through direct conversation. In play therapy, a child might use dolls, puppets, drawing, or a sandbox to express worries, anger, grief, fears, family changes, or experiences they do not yet have words for
For example, rather than saying, “I feel unsafe after my parents separated,” a child may repeatedly act out a family leaving and reuniting with toy figures. A therapist does not simply interpret the scene; they help the child feel understood, explore emotions at the child’s pace, and practice safer or more effective coping.
What it can address
According to the National Library of Medicine (2026), play therapy is “a treatment technique utilizing play as a medium for expression and communication between patient and therapist” (National Library of Medicine, 2026, Definition section).
Play Therapy is commonly used with preschool- and school-age children, especially those who have social, emotional, behavioral, or adjustment concerns. It may be part of treatment for:
- Anxiety, fears, and emotional dysregulation
- Grief, loss, and significant life transitions
- Trauma or stressful experiences
- Behavioral difficulties, aggression, or school concerns
- Difficulty expressing emotions or communicating verbally
- Family changes, including divorce, relocation, or a new sibling
